Thank you for your interest in enrolling your child in the world’s largest youth movement through the Heidelberg Scouts. Your child will be joining us as a Joey scout, Cub scout or a Scout. The process for membership is outlined below. Please take the time to read them carefully.
You will need to first complete the application for your child through one of the links below.
Joey Scout / Cub Scout / Scout
Once the form has been received, we allow a three-week ‘try-out’ period, which helps your child to decide whether they want to become a member of the group and for the leader to determine if they are appropriate for the unit.
Once this try-out period is completed, assuming that your child has enjoyed the experience and wants to become a member, we will complete the registration process. An invoice will be sent to you, and when this is paid, the registration process can proceed.
The fees cover the membership and insurance costs for the year. Please see below for a breakdown of the fees payable for the year.
Which includes the following:
Scouts Victoria Fee: $268 (Registration and insurance)
District Fee: $20 (District campsite, equipment, etc)
Group Fee: $240 (Includes equipment, supplies, property maintenance, badges, scarves and leader training, etc)
Our group is run entirely by volunteers. Most leaders are, or have been, parents of children in Scouting. We rely heavily on parents to become leaders and to involve themselves in the behind-the-scenes support structures such as the Group Committee. If interested, please contact us at: gl.heidelberg@scoutsvictoria.com.au
All Leaders and regular helpers have passed the relevant Police & Working with Children checks. Most of our leaders are also first aid trained.
We do expect parents to become involved with helping out in some part of the group. You will be required to be part of the group such as a Leader, Committee member, adult supporter or adult helper to help in areas such as maintenance of equipment (stores), fundraising, building maintenance, activities, publicity and promotions.
Scouting is a family activity. Parents are expected to help out where possible, e.g. driving to activities, working bees and cleaning up when needed. Parents need to get a Working With Children check (WWC) as you will be expected at times to assist with the transport of children other than yours to activities such as camps. Information on how to get a WWC is available at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/.
Your occupation and hobby may well be relevant to the running of our Scout group. We often have parents involved to share their knowledge with the kids. If you are keen, please let a leader know.
Parents must keep leaders up to date with any medical or behavioral issues that their child has. We have a strict no bullying policy. Also, we do not tolerate inappropriate language. If you have any concerns, please speak to a leader. Each unit also has a code of conduct that is created by the youth with assistance and guidance of the leaders.
Scouting involves an award scheme (badges) at all levels. Our program is designed by our leaders to enable all children to achieve the highest level in each section. In the older sections, personal commitment is also needed to achieve this. Scouting also involves camping at all levels which is required to achieve the highest level awards.
All members are expected to wear their Scout uniform to weekly meetings and some events and camps. You can purchase the Scout shirt for your child online at www.scoutshop.com.au.
